#TuksSoWhite: AfriForum Youth grateful for investigation
AfriForum Youth wants to thank the University of Pretoria (UP) for undertaking to investigate the South African Students Congress’ (Sasco) #TuksSoWhite campaign and take action if necessary.
The social media campaign on Facebook and Twitter makes, amongst other things, statements like “white students do not even experience loadshedding” and “Afrikaaner students still think they run this country, reality is they don’t, they remain a minority (which is a fact) and the university should not be catering for a minority”.
Rochelle Oosthuyse, Spokesperson for AfriForum Youth Tuks, says these statements are generally perceived as false and racist.
During a meeting with the President of the Student Representative Council (SRC), Mosibudi Rebotile Rasethaba, he said that white students must see the #TuksSoWhite campaign in context and that he fully supports the campaign. He added that a #TuksSoBlack campaign would however be perceived as racist by the SRC.
During a meeting yesterday, AfriForum Youth and UP agreed to the following:
- The policies of organisations like Sasco, PYA (Progressive Youth Alliance) and ARF (Anti-Racism Forum) must be investigated urgently.
- Action must be taken against the involved organisations, specifically Sasco and ARF, regarding their statements in the #TuksSoWhite campaign.
- There must be an investigation regarding the involvement of the SRC and more specifically Rasethaba and his support of the #TuksSoWhite campaign.
- The SRC must apologise publically.
“We want to thank the management for their cooperation and urge students to have mutual respect and recognition for one another,” says Oosthuyse.
