western front endurance

AfriForum Youth hosts three leadership and history hikes every year. The purpose of these hikes is to expose members and non-members to our history through experiential training. It offers adventurous young people an opportunity to get involved in AfriForum Youth and to understand why it is so important to make a difference.

The Western Front Endurance’s theme is the Anglo-Boer War that was fought from 1899 to 1902. We specifically tour areas where battles were fought under the commands of Generals De la Rey, De Wet and Cronjé. It differs from the Rebels’ Track Endurance because we walk from battlefield to battlefield and from position to position to study these in depth.

Come and learn how our generals had to come up with plans.

Boerspitus

Boerspitus is as original as the name sounds: It is a combination of boeresport, spitbraai and cantus. This tradition, which creates opportunities for students and young people from across the country to get together once a year, was founded in 2016 by AfriForum Youth’s Kovsies branch. The idea stems from the Universities of the Free State and the North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus’s management abolishing Intervarsity – a tradition going back 70 years.

Boerspitus is an opportunity to celebrate in Afrikaans and to have fun in your own culture. There are two categories in which you can participate as a team:

  • Tertiary institutions (universities, hostels or colleges); and
  • Towns and/or cities.

You can of course also attend Boerspitus as a spectator!

This year’s weekend programme entails:

Friday 14 October:
19:30 for 20:00 – Cantus

Saturday 15 October:
09:00 – Boeresport
13:00 – Floating in the river
17:00 – Spitbraai

Rebels’ Track

AfriForum Youth hosts three leadership and history hikes every year. The purpose of these hikes is to expose members and non-members to our history through experiential training. It offers adventurous young people an opportunity to get involved in AfriForum Youth and to understand why it is so important to make a difference.

AfriForum Youth ventured on the first Rebels’ Track from 31 March to 6 April 2018 in cooperation with Dr Louis Bothma en with 28 students and support staff. The history hike commemorates the Rebellion of 1914–1915. The route stretches from Upington to the farm Zwartmodder in the Western Kalahari. From there we trek in a southern direction and then resume the trek from Schuitdrif close to Nous in the Boesmanland up to the Rebellieboom (Tree of the Rebels) just before Upington. This tour was specially designed to teach young people about the Rebellion of 1914–1915. There is no other way for people to trek this route except with AfriForum and with Dr Bothma as tour guide.

Be part of this unique experience. Meet new people – and maybe rediscover yourself.
