AfriForum Youth lays charge against Tuks demonstrator after assault
AfriForum Youth Tuks laid a charge of assault at the South African Police Service (SAPS) after a member of this youth organisation was attacked during the election of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at the University of Pretoria (UP).
The incident took place last week when demonstrators disrupted the election.
“Violent demonstrations at universities showed a sharp increase over the last couple of months. Subsequently the safety of students is placed in danger and they are also deprived of their right to education. In this case students were also deprived of their right to participate in an election that is free, safe and transparent,” says Jaco Grobbelaar, Campus Coordinator for AfriForum Youth Tuks.
AfriForum Youth is encouraging students and parents to act against those individuals who make themselves guilty of violence on campus. The youth organisation is also prepared to assist students wherever possible.
AfriForum Youth is also making a plea to parents of students to sign the organisation’s petition and in so doing ensure that students can study in a peaceful environment. The link to the petition is http://afriforumjeug.co.za/university-management-let-students-study-peace/.
