AfriForum Youth honours victims of Church Street bomb attack
AfriForum Youth laid wreaths and held a minute of silence today at Freedom Park to honour the 19 dead and more than 200 injured in the 1983 ANC terror attack on the people of Pretoria.
19 members of AfriForum Youth and AfriForum laid a wreath for each of the victims. During the event a request was submitted to Mr Khorommbi Matibe, the Head of Public Participation at Freedom Park that the names of the 19 victims be added to the Wall of Names.
“This cold-blooded attack, which happened during rush hour in one of the busiest parts of the CBD, is part of our history. The victims were South Africans of all races. The current tendency by the ANC to rewrite history in such a way that ANC leaders are presented as heroes, is a misrepresentation of the facts. We cannot merely remember what the ANC prescribes and conveniently forget about the rest,” said Henk Maree, National Chair of AfriForum Youth.
AfriForum Youth is planning on establishing a committee to ensure that these victims be honoured and remembered. The youth organisation emphasised that this decision was not a political gesture, but an effort by the youth to present a balanced view of South African history.
