AfriForum Youth demands apology from Memela over racist statements
AfriForum Youth demands that columnist Sandile Memela apologises to all South Africans for racist remarks he had made in a blog on the website of the Mail and Guardian. In the blog Memela says that some whites buy guns for two reasons: to kill animals and black people. Some white men, Memela says, do not even distinguish between the two.
He said further that if Oscar Pistorius had shot a black robber, as he alleges, and not his white girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, he would not even have been prosecuted but would have been hailed as a hero.
Memela is Chief Director of Social Cohesion in the Department of Arts and Culture.
“AfriForum Youth is of the opinion that Mr Memela’s remarks incite racial tension and that this is a verbal attack on the dignity of white South Africans. His position requires of him to promote mutual respect and tolerance, and he has failed abysmally to discharge this duty. AfriForum Youth therefore demands that Mr Memela extends a public apology to all South Africans,” said Eduan Dupper, spokesperson for AfriForum Youth.
AfriForum Youth is also requesting a meeting with Mr Memela to discuss the statements and to ensure that no similar statements are made in future.
