AfriForum Youth condemns Angie Motshekga’s ill-considered statements
AfriForum Youth describes Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga’s statement, that Grade 11 learners who failed should be promoted to Grade 12, as untenable. The youth organisation is also of the view that the matric pass rate of 75,8 % is misleading.
“It’s unjustifiable to promote a Grade 11 learner who flunked. It is common knowledge that such a learner will probably not pass Grade 12,” Henk Maree, National Chairman of AfriForum Youth, said.
“This approach is unsustainable and will not solve the problem of uneducated youth in South Africa. Learners should rather get the necessary support from Government, and the quality of education in poorer communities should enjoy greater priority. Greater focus should also be placed on the foundation phase to minimise problems students may encounter later on,” Maree said.
AfriForum Youth encourages matriculants who are struggling to obtain their results, to contact the organisation.
