AfriForum Youth challenges UFS management to submit affirmative action appointments to SAHRC
AfriForum Youth today challenged the UFS management and Prof Jonathan Jansen, rector of the University of the Free State (UFS), to report those appointed to the UFS in terms of affirmative action and students who were admitted to certain courses based on quota systems, to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).
This came in reaction to a complaint submitted by Prof Jansen to the SAHRC about an advertisement for accommodation near the UFS for “non-affirmative persons”.
“We are against any form of racial profiling. Yet it is clear that Prof Jansen is selective in the type of racial profiling he condemns,” said Henk Maree, National Chair of AfriForum Youth.
AfriForum Youth condemns any instance where people are excluded based on their race, and regards the silence of the UFS on other practices as a double standard.
“Many students are refused entrance to faculties such as Medicine, because the UFS openly admits that they push transformation based on racial profiling. The same principle applies to appointments at the UFS.A rector cannot choose which discriminatory practices he wants to condemn and which he wants to support. One standard should apply,” Maree said.
“One can’t help but wonder if he would have responded the same way if the advertisement had been for black students only,” Maree said.
