AfriForum Youth empowers women to take ownership of their future

During August, more than 30 young women joined AfriForum Youth in demonstrating that Women’s Month is about more than simply celebrating womanhood; it is also about recognising women’s ability to actively shape their own future and their communities. From boxing gloves to sewing machines, young women were equipped with practical skills to become stronger, more confident and more self-reliant.

As part of AfriForum Youth’s efforts to empower women, the organisation hosted boxing classes in Stellenbosch, Potchefstroom and Pretoria. More than 20 students took part in these sessions, which combined fitness and personal safety in a practical and enjoyable way.

“AfriForum Youth wants young women to realise that self-reliance is about far more than academic or financial success. It is also about being able to look after yourself, having self-confidence, and being physically and mentally strong enough to seize opportunities and face challenges,” says Anne-C’Monn Joubert, Youth Officer at AfriForum Youth.

In addition, the youth organisation hosted a beginner-friendly sewing class in Bloemfontein in an effort to foster an entrepreneurial spirit among young people. Participants learnt practical sewing skills and made their own skirts.

“AfriForum Youth wants to help shape a generation of young women who do not wait for someone else to build their community, career or future. We want to equip them with the skills, confidence and mindset to take responsibility and lead for themselves,” says Joubert.
