AfriForum Youth demands action from Dr Nzimande and the SAHRC
AfriForum Youth demands a probe, action as well as the implementation of a plan from the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Blade Nzimande as well as the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) to ensure the safety of students at Medunsa. These demands come after the youth organisation received numerous complaints from Medunsa students.
“We have submitted our letter of demands to both institutions. Innocent students get death threats on social media, in SMSs and on campus, while racist remarks are made towards non-black students as they don’t want to participate in the strike. The situation on campus is out of control and immediate action is necessary,” Henk Maree, National Chairman of AfriForum Youth, said.
According to Maree, students are afraid to go to class. “A fuss was made about incidents at other universities since the beginning of the year, but Higher Education and the SAHRC is silent about the strike at Medunsa.”
AfriForum has given the institutions time until Friday, 5 September to respond to the demands.
