10 Point Prevention Plan for campuses

AfriForum Youth today introduced a National Prevention Plan for campuses across South Africa. This, following the violence that prevailed at the Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch last week, as well as threats of similar acts of violence on other campuses in the country.

“We believe it’s better to take precaution and to have plans in place for in case similar violent protests are to occur at other universities,” Henk Maree, National Chairman of AfriForum Youth, said.

The Prevention Plan consists of ten actions which will be implemented at seven tertiary institutions. It includes:

  • The compiling of response plans which will be executed when violent protests erupt;
  • The utilization of private security firms to protect the rights of students;
  • Actions for the retention of Afrikaans; and
  • Education in student rights and self-defence training.

 

Some of the plans are already in place today. Letters were sent to the Ministers of Higher Education, Dr Blade Nzimande and the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Mr Senzeni Zokwana. “We want to work in partnership with campuses’ security and management as far as possible in the implementation of the Prevention Plan, but we will not hesitate ensuring the safety and rights of students ourselves,” Maree said.
