AfriForum Youth calls on eligible young voters to participate in the municipal elections tomorrow (4 November), as young people play an important role in the future of their communities. The youth organisation believes that leadership entails more than merely holding an official position; it also involves a willingness to take responsibility for one\u2019s immediate community from an early stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
AfriForum Youth believes in the principles of decentralisation and federalism, where communities have a say in their own survival; however, the youth organisation maintains that one cannot wait for these conditions to be met before casting a vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCommunities must have the capacity and freedom to decide on their own future, but we do not want the youth to withdraw from democratic processes while waiting for ideal political conditions. The opportunity to exercise our democratic right on election day is one of the ways in which we can be involved right now,\u201d says Hanno Koster, youth leader of AfriForum Youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although AfriForum is not affiliated with any political party and does not dictate to its members which party they should vote for, the organisation emphasises the importance of participating in an informed manner. Local government plays a decisive role in service delivery that affect communities on a daily basis; therefore, it is important that voters are well-informed about the parties and representatives for whom they cast their votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Koster, young people must realise that civic responsibility does not end at the ballot box. It also entails becoming actively involved in their communities between elections, helping to find solutions to local challenges, and holding their elected representatives accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe often say that the young people of today are the leaders of tomorrow. The question, however, is what we are doing today to prepare for that responsibility. Leadership is not developed overnight. It grows through the decisions we make, the responsibility we accept, and the contribution we make to our communities.
