AfriForum Youth supports suspended House Committe

deur in Hot Mediastatements op 03 March, 2014

AfriForum Youth has offered its support to members of the Karlien Female Residence at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University. This comes after the House Committee was temporarily suspended, after charges – which are still unknown to them – were laid against them. The youth organisation is of the view that the University’s steps against the students are unreasonable.

“AfriForum Youth plays a supporting role and has involved our legal team to give advice and legal support to the students,” Henk Maree, National Chairperson of AfriForum Youth, said.

AfriForum Youth does not want to place the University in a bad light, but argues that the students are entitled to a fair process and that they have the right to know what charges they are facing. The content of the charge sheet has however already reached the media and creates the perception that the students are guilty.

“It seems as if the charges relate to alleged initiation practises, and we agree that unhealthy student traditions should be condemned, but even if this is the case in this situation, steps taken against students should be done in a fair and equitable manner,” Maree concluded.
